MRS. LEGASSICK'S SCIENCE CLASS
Mixing It Up Vocabulary:
  1. system -  a group of things or parts that work together.
  2. science -  is a way of knowing and learning about the natural world and may not answer all questions.
  3. mass - the amount of matter in an object
  4. magnetism - the force of repulsion (pushing) or attraction (pulling) between poles of magnets
  5. solid - the state of matter that has a definite shape and definite volume
  6. liquid - the state of matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape
  7. gas - the state of matter that does NOT have definite shape or volume
  8. physical state of matter - one of the four principal conditions in which matter exists—solid, liquid, gas, and plasma.
  9. physical change - is any change NOT involving a change in the substance's chemical identity
  10. chemical change - is any change that results in the formation of new chemical substances.
  11. relative density - the amount of matter compacted into a given volume of a substance
  12. sink -  to drop to the bottom of a liquid or a gas
  13. float - to stay on top of a liquid or a gas
  14. solubility - the ability of one substance to be dissolved in another substance
  15. conductor - a material that conducts electrons easily
  16. insulator - a material that does not carry electrons
  17. thermal energy - (heat energy) - the energy of moving particles that produces heat.
  18. electrical energy -  the form of energy that consists of a flow of electric charges through a conductor
  19. boiling point - the temperature at which a liquid begins to boil and turns into a gas
  20. freezing point - the temperature at which a liquid freezes and solidifies
  21. melting point -  the temperature at which a solid melts
  22. celsius - is a temperature scale. It is used to tell how hot or cold something is. It is often written as °C.  Water freezes at 0°C and boils at 100°C
  23. mixtures - a combination of two or more substances that keep their own properties
  24. ingredients - a component of a mixture
  25. solutions -  a mixture of two or more substances that are evenly distributed throughout
  26. dissolving - to mix completely with another substance to form a solution
  27. iron filings -  are very small pieces of iron that look like a light powder.
  28. weight -  the force of gravity on an object
  29. triple beam balance - a tool used to measure mass
  30. thermometer - a tool used to measure temperature in degrees
  31. scale - a tool used to compare the masses of two objects
  32. sieve -  a tool used to separate substances
  33. evaporating - the process by which a liquid changes to a gas
  34. condensing -  the process if a gas changing to a liquid  as a result of cooling
  35. melting - the process of a solid turning to a liquid
